Friends of Metfield

This is to introduce a few people that we think produce with integrity. We've chosen them only if they are producers and only if we think they're good.

Briston Aberdeen Angus

If you like beef try Duncan and Tracey's grass fed pedigree Aberdeen Angus beef. I had one of the best ribs I've ever had from them, melt in the mouth, full of rich flavour, with enough fat on top to crisp beautifully after being dredged with flour. Duncan and Tracey are another of the new breed of East Anglian farmer, breeding for taste and quality. You can buy it at Aylsham, Ely, or Fakenham Farmers markets or directly from them. Chillis Galore

If you mean chilli then Wilf and Kathy are your people. Based in Norwich they sell at Farmers Markets as well as through their website and may different retailers around East Anglia. Apart from the fact that their products are top notch, Richard Branson has praised their business model and success in his book. So go out and try some of their product! Check their website for a very good forum on all things chilli.

Cley Smokehouse

This is a popular shop in the pretty village of Cley-next-the-Sea, right next to one of our stockists, Picnic Fayre. (see www.metfieldbakery.com/stockists/stockists-in-norfolk. They do fantastic sweet pickled herrings as well as delicious bloaters and kippers.(www.metfieldbakery.com/recipes/recipe-260). Have a look at the recipe for kippers for an idea on how to serve them. They have just launched a range of dry cured meats and sausage so if anyone wants to let us know what they think of them, please leave us a comment on the forum.

The latter is a cheddar type cheese that is a firm favourite in our quiches. Contact Details Ellie Betts Ferndale Farm Little Barningham Norwich NR11 7AG 01263 577640

GM Hydraulics

Ok so they don't make food. But they are fantastic neighbours of ours and always helpful and generous with both their time and forklift. So if you need a hydraulics engineer, they're the kiddies. But don't try and buy food from them - it'll probably be covered in engine oil. Thanks you lot - for everything.

Heather White's Suffolk cross Lamb

Heather produces Suffolk cross with Hampshire lamb. The shoulders are unbeatable for tagines and stews, and the incredibly long chops are meaty, tasty, tender and delicious. Philip and Glynis are two of the nicest people you could hope to meet and they have helped us out a lot, especially when we needed a display fridge - which we broke (Sorry)!! So never lend us one. On the other hand if you need one give Glynis a ring - she'll be only too happy to help!!! They have a small farm in Rickinghall, Suffolk, and produce a fantastic range of free-range Gloucestershire Old Spot pork, free-range Norfolk bronze turkeys, home-reared lamb and the most delicious range of home-made jams, pickles and preserves. Their meats are from their own farm and the service and products here have a legendary reputation. Contact Details: C Lidgates Butchers 110 Holland Park Ave, London. Tel: 020 7727 8243

Maple Farm

Maple Farm is a small(ish) family owned farm in in Kelsale, Suffolk. It is owned by William and Miranda Kendall, who a few years ago took the decision to convert their acreage to organic production. Their aim is to try and support the farm by selling their produce on a local scale, and farming in a sustainable manner, believing that smaller scale systems result in happier livestock, better produce, and an increase in local native wildlife. We make bread for them for their farmer's market at Snape and sell some to our own customers too. They are growing some spelt for us to play with too. We believe very much in creating local products with local character and Maple Farm is one of our partners in helping us to achieve that vision. Oh yes, William has the most fantastic Middle White pigs too. You can buy their produce in and around that part of the Suffolk coast, at Snape Farmer's Market or by contacting them direct at: Maple Farm, Kelsale, Saxmundham, IP17 2PJ Email: info@maplefarmkelsale.co.uk Telephone: 01728 652000 Fax: 01728 652001

Martins Farm, Hindolveston

This wonderful farm is run by our good friends Karen and Jason Peart. The farm has been in Jason's family for a couple of generations now, and Jason took the brave decision to move away from the commercial farming previously employed on the farm, and started to breed on a small scale meat breeds which they then sold direct to the consumer. One of the best meat producers in East Anglia: they rear the most incredible ducks, and wonderful chickens and guinea fowl. The pork they rear is rare breed and everything is bred longer for flavour. The care and attention they put into their produce is evident from the flavour. Apart from selling at Aylsham & Fakenham Farmers Market you can buy directly from their farm. Do not miss a trip to their help yourself shop in front of the farm: you will find everything you need for a weekend fried breakfast and the perfect roast to follow. Norfolk to the core they are typical of a new generation of East Anglian small farmer, unafraid to take risks and are producers of the very highest standard. I am proud to use their produce where I can and wish them every success. You can contact them direct at Martin's Farm Melton Road Hindolveston Norfolk NR20 5DB Tel 01263 860714

The Fat Cat

The Fat Cat merits a mention here as it is a brewer as well as one of the finest pubs in the country. Colin and Marjorie Keatling have won the coveted CAMRA Pub of the Year title twice now; the only pub in the UK so far to do so. Not only are they keepers of particularly fine ales but they brew their own too, and we like their stout so much that we pickle our hams and bacon in it (no small compliment!). If you are in Norwich and have time for a beer then we cannot reccommend this pub highly enough. Oh, and they stock our pork pies too, if you needed more persuasion. Find them at: 49 West End St, Norwich, NR2 4NA Telephone: 01603 624 364

Wells Deli

Wells Deli is situated on the quay in the small seaside town of Wells-next-the-Sea. It is run by our friend Matt Turner and his 'glamorous assistant,' Tabby. The deli offers the very best locally-produced and locally-made products. Each morning Tabby makes the most amazing selection of sandwiches and paninis using the best quality ingredients. Matt and Tabby have recently opened a second shop in Wells- an ubercool 'Juice Hut' on Staithe Street selling natural fruit smoothies. You can perch in the window and watch the world go by, or turn around and watch extreme sports on the wall mounted flat screen TV! Visit in the winter and you can enjoy a chat over a cup of tea, visit in the summer and you'll have to fight your way to the counter! Would be nice to have credit for using our photos on your website though!! Wells Deli, 15 The Quay, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, NR23 1AH Telephone (01328) 711171 matt@wellsdeli.co.uk

Wiveton Hall Fruit Farm

Desmond Macarthy has been quietly producing very fine fruit and vegetables for a number of years now. If you get the chance try Desmond's globe artichokes. He has some of the smaller purple varieties as well as the more common green ones
